Beyond the Library presents A Solar Viewing Party with ATMoB
The brightest star in our skies is our own sun. It shines so brightly because it is only 93 million miles away! Nuclear fusion reactions in its core produce the energy that keeps the star stable and it’s this energy that ultimately leaves the sun’s photosphere as light and heat, warming not only the Earth but everything else in the solar system. The sun is so bright that astronomers have to use special equipment to observe it.
Registration is required.

Darkness in Distress: Halting the Rise of Light Pollution
Join us during MA Space Week as we celebrate the beauty and health of both the Earth and the Night Sky!
Light pollution occurs when the night sky is illuminated by artificial light sources, and can negatively impact the world around us. Most of this light never touches the ground.
This presentation will teach us about the different ways that this illumination can affect the natural nighttime landscape, and disturb the environment. It provides a basic overview of light-pollution issues — with special emphasis on five negatively-affected themes: (1) loss of starry nights; (2) glare; (3) ecological harm; (4) human factors; and (5) energy waste.
Presented by Kelly Beatty, a former member of International DarkSky Association (IDA)’s Board of Directors.
